Reggae Groove on Cajon

Hi, today I’m going to teach you how to play Reggae on the Cajon.

I’m going to show you 2 basic Reggae grooves for the Cajon. The first one is the ONE DROP which was created in the 60’s by Carlton Barret, drummer of Bob Marley and the wailers. The second groove is a variation of one drop and its called The Rockers.

So, let’s get started!

First you are going to start building the one drop groove with a 16th note pattern playing ghost notes in the Snare of the Cajon. This time, instead of playing straight 16th notes we are going to apply the swing feel (see video)

Then we add the Bass tone on beats 2 & 4 of the bar (see video)

Now it’s time to see The Rockers groove

To build this groove we continue with the 16th note pattern in a swing feel but now the Bass tone is played on beats 1 and 3 of the bar (see video)

Now we add the snare hit on beats 2 and 4 of the bar (see video)

This is how I adapted this 2 reggae grooves from the drum set to the Cajon. Watch the video below to listen how it sounds.
